Hi fellow villagers. I attended the South Hills meeting and continue to learn a tremendous amount about the city. If anyone has any questions or comments let me know. Have a great week!
SouthHills-6PM
South Hills Council-Jacque
30 people in attendance
Michael - From Treva’s office
Officer Vasquez dial in
Murder on Skyline
8 Robbies
24 Burglary
17 Stolen cars
Skyline project-Right at the end of Grass Valley
Boulders are being put up to block cars from parking
No parking on the access road-South Skyline right before Grass Valley Rd
I asked:
911 system fortification
They (Michael/Officer Vasquez) have no idea of the system upgrade
Criminal gangs and stolen cars
Gangs are stashing cars throughout Oakland, using them in robberies
#1 discussion-Golf Links repair update
Westbound lane closure due to slide in January
Estimating another 9 months of work. Oak DOT is waiting on approval from the Army Corp of Engineers due to the roads location on Arroyo Viejo
Very poor communication from the city and neighbors were very upset at this
#2 Cameras update
300 Cameras for all of Oakland (20 movable for D6/D7)
Cameras to be deployed based on crime data
I asked about the integrations to other systems, no one could answer
No ingteagrations to current OPD systems
# 3 -98th 580 freeway work
Small complaints from Neighbors
# 4 Grant not being received
Grant not received due to error
Standard city response
Multiple people asked questions (Who owned this etc)
It was communicated horribly. It was apparent to me that they are using their canned responses and not answering any more detailed questions.
#5 safety agency task forces
Cross coalition team of multiple municipalities (state, local and federal) to work together to reduce crime
It was very interesting to attend and hear about how the inner workings happen. In my humble opinion, there is a lack of understanding at the leadership level of how to integrate different systems. This is leading to some huge holes in services to residents. I, along with many other residents, were very vocal. Specifically around the cameras and the loss of the grant money.
The cameras have a $1M grant coming from the state to pay for them. The challenge is that Oakland doesn’t have a signed contract with an LDR (license plate data reader) software company. They are incapable of doing anything with the cameras until that is complete.
I will keep everyone updated on my next post, before the end of the year.
Next steps and interactions with Oakland:
1.) Working with Jacque (runs the South Hills Council) to manage the red tape at city hall regarding the camera integration (she worked for the CIty for 30 years)
2.) Call with Treva to move some of these things to the forefront.
Thanks for attending and raising our concerns with the 911 system upgrade, camera integration to other systems, and the missed deadline resulting in lack of funds towards safety & fighting crime. Looking forward to the next meeting/update. Praying for a better Oakland!!
